Before you set up the F.A.S.T. instrument, you’ll need to understand the names of its components and where each component is located on the instrument.
F.A.S.T. Instrument Front View
The LED indicator glows various colors that indicate different instrument statuses. Learn about the different colors possible on the F.A.S.T. instrument and what each color means below.
The Power button turns the F.A.S.T. on and off. When the instrument is plugged into a power source for the first time, the power button LED will blink to indicate that F.A.S.T. is charging its capacitors. If they are fully charged, the LED will turn to solid red to indicate that the instrument is ready to use.
Note: The two capacitors inside the F.A.S.T. instrument provide emergency power. If there is a power failure or blackout, the instrument will automatically shutdown to avoid malfunction.
The F.A.S.T. head consists of 96 tip plungers. It picks up the tips and controls the aspirate and dispense processes.
Each tip caddy holds up to 384 tips. You can use one caddy or two caddies for your experiment.
A Full Tip Caddy
There are six tray inserts in the tray that can hold up to five plates and two tip caddies for experiments. Tray insert 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 can be used for holding plates. Tray insert 2 can hold the tip caddy or to create a new labware.

The deck holds up the tray. It is also used as a Y stage.
F.A.S.T. Instrument Back View
The ventilation fan removes excess heat from the unit.
The e-stop port functions as an emergency stop when it is needed.
The power port is where you plug in the power cable.
Use this LAN cable port to connect your instrument to the internet through a wired network.
Plug any of your USB devices into this port to help you run the protocol.
The waste bin is where the F.A.S.T. head disposes of used tips.
