Creating a Grid Layer¶

Grid layers are simple to create, and allow more control over the variation of ingredients.

To create a grid layer:

  1. Open an experiment OR create a new one

  2. On the experiment page, go to the Canvas menu. Then, click Add Layer on the top bar and select Grid Layer.

  3. Select a grid layer area accordingly.

    1. To select all wells, click any well on the canvas.

    2. To select some wells, click and hold the left button of your mouse while dragging it over the desired wells.

  4. The Layers Design panel on the right side of your ROCK MAKER window will direct you to the Ingredients tab. For ingredient selection, click:

    • All tab if you want to select from existing ingredients.

      You can use the Search Ingredient field in the All tab for a quick search. The dropdown menu next to the Search Ingredient field allows you to choose a filter setting: All, Buffer, Non-Buffer, and Prepared.

    • Favorites tab if you want to select from your favorite ingredients.

  5. Once you select an ingredient, a panel to select a stock will appear. Select the desired stock.

    You can use the Search Stocks field for a quick search. The dropdown menu next to the Search Stocks field allows you to choose a filter setting: All, Buffer, Non-Buffer, and Prepared.

  6. A panel to edit the ingredient will appear. If your ingredient is a buffer, you can vary both concentration and pH.

    • The Name, Stock, and Type fields can be edited by clicking on the respective fields.

      Note

      The Type dropdown menu will be unselectable if the selected ingredient consists of only one type.

    • In case of buffers, click the Low and High pH fields, and select the desired stocks

      The Low pH field is optional, and it depends on the selected low pH.

    • Select the ingredients’ concentration or pH variations from the Vary Along field.

    • Type in the start and stop concentration in the Start and Stop fields.

      Note

      If you select vary along Row, Column, Linked Layer, or Well Number, the Start and Stop fields will appear for defining the variation parameters. If you select Custom in the Vary Along field, you need to input the volume or concentration values using the EDIT CUSTOM VALUES button.

      To input volume or concentration values:

      1. Click the EDIT CUSTOM VALUES button to open the Edit Custom Values dialog box. Then, type in a value accordingly.

      2. Click YES, PROCEED.

  7. In the available panel, you can find all ingredient information in the box(es) below the ADD INGREDIENT button.

    • By clicking the ADD INGREDIENT button, more ingredients can be added to the same grid layer.

    Note

    You can modify an ingredient by clicking the Edit edit_ingredient_in_grid_layer and Delete delete_layer buttons.

  8. Go to the Layers tab and complete the layer information.

    • Type a name in the Layer Name field or use the default name.

    • Select a target from the Target dropdown menu.

    • Type a volume in the Volume field.

    • Select a layer setting(s) (Override, Locked, or both) from the Layer Options field.

      Note

      By default, the Concentration field is set to Concentration Base. Selecting Override in the Layer Options field will automatically set the Concentration field to Volume Base.

    • Add a linked layer, if you want, by clicking the Add button in the Linked Layer field.

  9. On the toolbar, click Save.
